Benefits of regular maintenance of a diesel generator set

29 January 2025

The timely maintenance of diesel generator sets (DGS) is critical for the reliability of power supply in business and everyday life. Regular inspections ensure safe operation and prevent accidents and unexpected costs.

Regular maintenance gives you peace of mind if:

  1. The device that generates electricity is in good condition throughout the entire operational period.
  2. The operation of a diesel generator will not lead to emergency situations.
  3. Using the device after the warranty period has expired.

Although scheduled maintenance may seem like an unnecessary expense for your business, not performing regular maintenance can lead to a complete breakdown of your generator. Decommissioning your equipment due to a malfunction will result in even greater costs. Additional costs can arise if a malfunctioning unit starts to consume more fuel, producing less and less energy.

There are several types of maintenance for stationary and mobile diesel generators:

  1. Daily maintenance for regular stations is carried out once every 24 hours, and for standby stations before each use – to guarantee uninterrupted operation. The set of actions consists of: visual inspection of the external elements of the unit, checking the oil filling index and pressure, checking the reliability of connecting parts and the degree of wear of mechanisms in motion. For water-cooled units, it is necessary to additionally check its level. If the device is used regularly and intensively – maintenance is mandatory daily, especially when used at extremely low or high temperatures.
  2. Regular maintenance is carried out according to the planned schedule. The frequency of maintenance depends on the operating conditions, type and model of the installation. But they should include: test run and preventive maintenance related to electrical elements (starter, insulated cables, batteries, distribution panels), checking the operability of mechanisms (bolted connections, drive belts, fans) and clarifying indicators during the operation of the power plant. Additionally, parameters are adjusted and corrected.
  3. Maintenance depending on the operating hours. Scheduled maintenance checks are performed for each unit of the diesel power plant. The periodicity and list of works during maintenance 1, maintenance 2, etc. differs depending on the operating conditions and type of generator. The first maintenance is performed after approximately 100 hours of operation. It is mandatory to check the cleanliness and serviceability of the filter and adjust the mechanisms. The following maintenance procedures are carried out every 250, 1000, 5000 hours of operation of the diesel generator.

Do not neglect the manufacturers' recommendations on the frequency and completeness of work. Untimely maintenance can lead to malfunctions. The longer they remain unnoticed, the greater the likelihood that the unit will fail.
