On Monday, October 20, 2025, major disruptions were recorded worldwide across popular online platforms, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Signal, Amazon, and others.
The central cause was reported to be a failure in the cloud infrastructure of AWS (Amazon Web Services), one of the world’s largest cloud service providers.
According to Downdetector, the number of outage reports exceeded normal levels by severalfold.
Consequences for businesses and organizations
- Interrupted video meetings, chats, and online communications dealt a serious blow to productivity.
- Organizations relying on third-party services exposed their vulnerability: when an external provider goes down, business processes can come to a halt.
- Security and responsiveness risks: if one platform is unavailable, rapid switchover to a backup is required.
- From an IT-infrastructure standpoint, the cloud provider became a single point of failure for many services.
What should be done? ?
- Assess dependencies – determine which of your company’s services depend on external platforms or cloud providers and how critical their operation is.
- Build redundant infrastructure – maintain alternatives (internal or with another provider) for communications: video, chat, and file sharing.
- Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) – create and test scenarios: «the primary service fails – switch to the backup».
- Monitoring and alerting – configure a system that surfaces an outage before it affects users and prepares automated actions.
- Employee training – explain what to do when the primary platform is unavailable: where to report issues and which alternative to use.
Modern businesses cannot afford to stall because one of the global services has failed. This incident is a reminder that the reliability of communications and IT infrastructure must be assured. A sound redundancy strategy, alternative channels, and clear action planning are key to ensuring continuity of operations.
