Fast, efficient, balanced

2 May 2023

As we have reported in previous posts, the leading provider of cloud software and hyperconverged infrastructure solutions Nutanix has updated its software to AOS 6.6, which brings a number of significant performance and efficiency improvements. One of the key factors contributing to this improvement is the improved Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) technology, which is responsible for the distribution of data between the nodes of the cluster.

Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric (DSF) is a distributed storage system that is responsible for the efficiency of data distribution between cluster nodes. In Nutanix AOS 6.6 the algorithms for distributing data between cluster nodes have been improved thanks to improvements in the Extent Store. This new data distribution algorithm is based on the «critical path» concept.

In Nutanix Extent Store uses the «critical path» concept to optimize the execution time of data storage operations. Since the file system works with very large amounts of data, it is important to ensure that it is as efficient as possible. Using the «critical path» concept Nutanix Extent Store identifies those operations that have the greatest impact on execution time and places a special emphasis on optimizing these operations. This achieves a very high speed of the file system and ensures high performance when storing data in the cloud.

In addition to improved data distribution algorithms, Nutanix AOS 6.6 ncludes new features for automatic load balancing between cluster nodes. This feature improves system performance by distributing the load evenly among the nodes.

One of the exciting new features in Nutanix AOS 6.6 is NVMe-oF support. NVMe-oF (NVMe over Fabrics) is a data transfer protocol that allows you to connect NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) drives to storage systems over a network. Through the use of this technology, low latency and high performance are provided in a distributed storage system. This protocol allows you to significantly increase the data transfer rate and reduce network traffic.

On Nutanix, systems that support NVMe-oF, users can use high-speed NVMe drives for storage. This feature can greatly increase the data transfer rate and improve system performance, especially for data-intensive applications such as data virtualization and artificial intelligence.

As such, Nutanix AOS 6.6 offers significant enhancements to its technology with improved data distribution algorithms, automated workload balancing, and NVMe-oF support. As demand for storage and data management continues to grow, Nutanix with AOS 6.6 is well positioned to help businesses of all sizes address these challenges and stay ahead of the curve.
